Vinagra Village approved as replicator for Desert Adapt Project

The Main Goal of Desert-Adapt Project (http://www.desert-adapt.it/index.php/en/) is to demonstrate innovative climate adaptation strategies and technologies to improve land quality, soil conservation and plant support in Mediterranean areas under desertification risk.

Vinagra Village is one of the 40 replicators approved in 2022 that have embraced the responsibility to protect land by using adaptative strategies to ensure a safer planet for present and future generations. These strategies include:

  • Increase plant biomass and cover

  • Increase soil organic matter

  • Reduce soil erosion and loss

  • Stimulate biodiversity at all levels

  • Reduce fire risk

  • Protect quality and quantity of water bodies.

After joining Save Soil movement (https://save-soil.co/join), being chosen as a Desert adapt replicator shows the commitment of Vinagra Village with its goal in having a more structural complexity of vegetation for an improved biodiversity and soil quality for more sustainable food systems.

Vinagra Village implementation is since inception centred on sustainable management practices.

The first phase of the project was the analysis of productive potential with the regenerative structural planning done by renowned team of Terracrua Design lead by Nuno Mamede. Their expertise and creativity in permaculture and water management is outstanding.

The second phase was the construction of a network of ponds and swales that allow rain water to infiltrate on the landscape, now finished.

The third phase, was the creation of a structural grazing system for the fast recovery of pastures, based on the passage of Vinagra Village Merino Sheep herd in small paddocks for a short but intense grazing with the goal to produce more quality pasture, and the creation of the aromatic garden with medicinal and culinary herbs.

The fourth phase now in full force is the multi-layered plantation of productive zones with diverse species and layers for top soil improvement, the construction of natural fences to support biodiversity and the orchard with the first 160 trees arriving from Viveiros Castromil. Finally the packaging of our ponds with shrubs and trees to avoid erosion and planting aquatic plants for filtration. A lot to be done until April 2023.
